Flagship Project: Designing Enzymes to Destroy Forever Chemicals
PFAS - per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances - are toxic synthetic chemicals found in the blood of 98% of humans tested. They contaminate drinking water worldwide and never break down naturally. That's why they're called "forever chemicals."
No enzyme in nature can destroy them. So we're designing one from scratch.
Using de novo computational protein design, quantum chemistry simulations, and molecular dynamics, we're engineering novel enzymes that break the carbon-fluorine bond - the strongest single bond in organic chemistry - and degrade PFAS into harmless compounds.
